LUSITANIA Sinking German Propaganda Medal by Karl Goetz Original Box & Leaflet
KARL GOETZ BRITISH MEDAL ORIGINAL WITH BOX & PROPAGANDA LEAFLET. SINKING OF THE CUNARD LUSITANIA DISASTER. Dated May 5, 1915 (issued 1916 After Karl Goetz by Gordon Selfridge, British Version) The Sinking Of The R. S Lusitania Medal, Plain Edge, Grey Metal, 72.92gms, 55mm, Eimer. Initially issued By Karl Goetz as a satirical Medal in Bronze (few), the British government and Selfridge's Department store mass produced these (with the correct date and spelling of the month) as anti German Propoganda (Satire) for the sinking of the unarmed Lusitania. This piece comes with the original box of issue and leaflet which are scarce with all 3 pieces intact. The medal is in Uncirculated condition and the box has some wear (Lids still attached), leaflet also has wear and a small tear at the top.
Leaflet matches the box and medal and is similarly the English Version Leaflet. Also included is a newspaper article dated 10/10/1918 titled "The Man Who Sank the Lusitania".
Uncirculated, As Struck Medal, Box and leaflet with wear (lid still attached). As an interesting side note. My grandfather wrote a note that I found inside the box stating that my grandmother's aunt was one of those passengers who survived after being in the water for several hours.
