Bassett Lowke 1920s clockwork lifeboat. The original sails aren't rigged. I just connected the original rigging lines - with original fittings - to the mast by a temporary fixing. The mast rests on its top end on the deck over the brake for the motor - which is activated by screwing it down. 63cm long including rudder 17cm wide.
Original key and sturdy carry box with original cushion material and working clasps. The box is of more solid construction than later carry boxes. The boat has survived with all its original deck furniture and stern mounted harpoon - most of which are shiny nickel plated more in keeping with Bassett Lowke's builder's models than their later boats. It does have some play wear but one can see the fine crazing in the paint characteristic of age and the paint has survived better than on a lot of Lowke boats. The paint wear is due to play rather than the thermal chipping off of paint due to the expansion and contraction of wood over the years as often happens with very old wooden boats - especially Bassertt Lowke. So this is more'future proof' than a lot of Lowke boats.VIDEO 1920 Bassett Lowke clockwork lifeboat original box key bing. Video will open in a new window. This boat will grow on you the more you watch the video. The low free-board and broad beam make it different to all other clockwork boats.
It does indeed look like it would survive in a storm. Although I've not tested it in one......... The mast, in its down position, rests on its top end on the deck over the brake for the motor - which is activated by screwing it down. The boat has survived with all its original deck furniture, port-holes, winches, nav lights and railings and stern mounted harpoon - most of which are shiny nickel plated more in keeping with Bassett Lowke's builder's models than their later boats. So this is more'future proof' in terms of paint resilience than a lot of Lowke boats. Upon reflection - the fine pavement crazing seen in the paint has a lot in common with German tin boats - and such diffuse fine crazing probably relaxes the stress in the paint coating so that big pieces don't chip off as is the case with some Lowke and indeed German tin boats.
