A fine set of six Wedgewood Queensware demitasse cups and saucers. They're in the in the "Can" shape, which dates back to the earliest years of the company. They're decorated for the New York Central System, with lithographic transfers in dark red (I'm fairly certain that this is a custom color) of the railroad's first engine, the DeWitt Clinton. The saucers have a floral border. This set is in its original gray cardboard gift box, with the NYCC's "cigar band" logo on the lid. This logo was introduced in 1959 and discontinued in 1968 with the merger of the company with the Pennsy, which nails the date of this set down pretty firmly. I've seen a couple of these sets before, and we've handled a bunch of related railroad glassware and china, and my suspicion is that these were a holiday gift for upper-level executives and other important people who did business with the line. You see individual cups and saucers from this set come up from time to time, but finding the complete set in its original box is hard. The cups are 2.75" tall, 2.5" in diameter and 3.5 across the handles. Saucers are 5.125 in diameter. The box is 11.75" square and 3" tall. Condition: the cardboard gift box is somewhat tattered, with tape repairs to the lid and interior dividers. The Wedgwood demi tasses and saucers are all fine, no wear or damage. Mark: printed marks in burgundy on the bottoms: Wedgwood marks, New York Central logo, caption, and Shreve, Crump & Lowe marks (SC&L is a Boston jeweler who has had a long relationship as an American agent for Wedgwood).
